Clock Tower of Tirana is a monument of culture of first category, approved by Law
no. 609, dated 24.05.1948. The clock tower is part of the urban organization of the
historic center from later medieval city of Tirana, along with market (bazaar),
administrative buildings, cult buildings (mosques) and other buildingds for social use.
Clock Tower of Tirana was built in the nineteenth century between the years 1822-
1840, at the same time like Peqini and Kavaja Tower. This tower is built along a
vertical axis, reaching a greater height. Its base (ground floor) is squared and the
lower part is more greater height where weights moves, and in the upper part of the
premises are the mechanism and the bell of clock. The clock tower has only a gate
for entrance.
The lower part was built with thick stone wall bearing wooden stairs that lead to the
upper part of tower. Its lighting is realized by narrow windows as turrets. On the upper
part of the floor is set the clock mechanism, in some cases with additional fields later
in time, like Tirana, Kavaja. Modification of the mechanism from clock with sound in
mechanized field clock has brought changes to the original appearance of this clock
tower. This intervention was made in 1928, rebuilding the upper floors like we see
today.
Clock Tower of Tirana is in good conditions thanks to the restoration interventions
undertaken in years. Clock tower is part of the architectural ensemble of Ethem Bey
Mosque close to it.
