Il trasporto refrigerato rappresenta un anello fondamentale della catena del freddo, garantendo che i prodotti deperibili come alimenti e farmaci mantengano la loro qualità e sicurezza. Si stima che circa il 31% della catena di approvvigionamento alimentare si affidi al trasporto a temperatura controllata (Bagheri et al., 2017). Il settore ha registrato una rapida espansione, raggiungendo circa 5,7 milioni di veicoli stradali refrigerati in tutto il mondo con una crescita prevista anche in futuro, in particolare nelle regioni in via di sviluppo come l’Africa e l’Asia meridionale. Tuttavia, il funzionamento delle unità di refrigerazione per il trasporto presenta sfide uniche rispetto ai sistemi fissi, tra cui condizioni ambientali variabili, carichi di merci fluttuanti e frequenti aperture delle porte che compromettono la stabilità termica. Inoltre, la refrigerazione durante il trasporto influisce non solo sulla sicurezza alimentare, ma anche sul consumo energetico e sulle emissioni inquinanti dei veicoli. Le sfide che il trasporto refrigerato si trova ad affrontare riguardano la transizione verso refrigeranti naturali, l’elettrificazione dei gruppi in relazione all’evoluzione della trazione verso soluzioni sostenibili, l’integrazione con fonti rinnovabili, l’utilizzo di accumuli termici, il miglioramento dell’isolamento, l’ottimizzazione della logistica e del last- mile delivery e l’adozione di sistemi di IA.
